How do I know if a Leonberger is right for me? We recommend some “hands on” encounters. Visit with several Leos and their owners. Every Leonberger is an individual in the same way every person is unique, so visit with as many as possible to get a good feel for the breed. Also speak to individual owners of companion dogs as well as breeders. Also Members of the LCA(Leonberger Club of the America) will be happy to share their insight. LCA website www.leonbergerclubofamerica.com Do Leonbergers eat a lot? Not necessarily. We feed a very high quality, all natural diet that is utilized more efficiently, therefore less quantity is needed. Feeding your Leo a lesser quality food which appears to be more economical will require the dog to eat more, but in fact will be receiving less nutrients because of fillers. This affects growth, future health and the general well being of the dog. Put the very best into your dog to get the very best out of him. Do Leonbergers shed much? Yes. Big dogs, big coats, lots of hair! Brushing your Leo twice a week will minimize loose hair around the house. Most dogs enjoy the attention of grooming and this will give you more quality time to promote bonding. How long do Leonbergers live? Longevity is a concern and a priority in our breeding program as it is with most breeders. Careful screening of generations for various health issues will hopefully lengthen the lifespan of each new litter. Currently, nine to eleven years is the average. How much space do I need for a Leonberger? While an apartment is not appropriate for a Leo, they do not require acres of property either. A fenced yard or moderate sized fenced run or kennel is ideal. This however is not substitute for exercise. Daily exercise is in the form of walks and some playtime will keep your Leo content to lie at your feet for the rest of the day. Are Leonbergers outside dogs? Leonbergers are bred for companionship and, while physically capable of enduring most weather other than heat, they have a need to be with their families. They love to participate in whatever activities the family is involved in, whether that is hiking, yard work or simply lying on the living room floor. Are Leonbergers difficult to train? No. Leos are, in general, very intelligent and quick learners. We do recommend professional training classes that use positive reinforcement and have a good knowledge of canine behavior. These classes are also great places to socialize your puppy when coupled with other “out of house” activities. Take your puppy to as many new and different situations as possible. Puppies of any breed are time consuming and their needs are fairly constant. Leos are no different. A significant commitment is required to develop a fluffy puppy into a polite, well-behaved companion you can take anywhere. How are Leonbergers with other pets? With a proper introduction, Leonbergers are fine with other pets and seem to enjoy an extended family. You can find our email address in Contact Us |
