Health and Care of our Leonbergers

Nordlicht Kennel is dedicated to preserving the Old World Leonberger, continuing the qualities that have made this breed a unique companion for over one hundred years. Nordlicht Leonbergers are bred for their balanced temperaments, intelligence and longevity.

Our holistic approach to the total dog unites spirit and body. Daily massages, acupressure and a complete natural ,some organic diet are used to care for each dog and puppy. Individual exercise programs and a playtime of equal length ensure each Leonberger the attention they need to reach their full potential as happy, healthy companions. For these reasons we remain a small kennel.

Puppies are hand-raised underfoot in my home. They are exposed to different foods and have play time in a minature agility center to experience new textures, sights and sounds. Great care is taken. Nordlicht puppies go to approved homes only.

A word about dog food

Sorting through dozens of homemade diets and commercial foods can be a seemingly overwhelming task, but if you know the basic do’s and don’ts you can make an informed choice with confidence. In commercial dog food look for:

  • No preservatives or artificial colors
  • Human quality ingredients (blueberries, cottage cheese, etc)
  • The first two ingredients as animal protein (beef, chicken) not meat by-product.
  • Carbohydrates — grain and vegetables/fruit are essential for energy, but avoid corn, soy, wheat or white rice (these are inexpensive fillers not easily digested by canines).
  • Polyunsaturated and saturated fats — flax seed or flax seed oil, safflower oil. Always look for Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids.

Nordlicht Kennel uses a combination of homemade and commercial diets. We feed Soild Gold Dog Food (all natural and grain-free), that is divided into a morning, midday and an evening meal. Snacks are one of the following: yogurt, cottage cheese, lightly steamed vegetables or raw fruit. Our links section has some nice websites on dog foods. We hope they will be helpful.
